It is often forgotten how important coal was to the economy until the middle of the 20th Century. The Willoughby family wealth came from coal mining.

Their home at Wollaton Hall in Nottingham reflects the situation at that time. The following photographs are of the house and gardens. The animal trophy heads are the result of various hunting expeditions by members of the family. I would recommend a visit if you get the chance. See below for more detail

Then there are the modern day images of coal. A coal fired power station. Still very much needed to produce electricity when there is no sun or wind.
